Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
I write this in the throes of a stomach bug (hoping I am at the tail end of it, of course!). As a result, the idea of being hungry—or thirsty—is fairly clear in my mind. At this point, I am looking forward to that moment when I start to again desire food. Nibbling crackers only goes so far . . .
Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” The idea is that we should long to be in the presence of Jesus—that we should yearn for communion with him. In other words, it is God’s design for us that we draw nearer and nearer to his Son. It is God’s design for us that we be satisfied in being close to Christ. To wit, we find our hunger satiated and our thirst quenched when we are walking with the Son of God.
In John 6, Jesus confirmed to the crowd that in him there is complete and utter fulfillment. In Jesus there is no longer any hunger or any thirst. In Jesus there is life that is full, abundant, and real. In Jesus there is a contentment that cannot be found anywhere else. In Jesus, and only in Jesus, we are truly and fully filled with everything that is good and right and holy.
Today is a great day. Let us enjoy it together as we worship the one true God.
