There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Freedom is something that we cherish. As citizens of this country, freedom is very much at the heart of who we are as a nation. It is the very foundation upon which our country has been built. Freedom allows us to work and play and worship in ways and at times of our choosing. Freedom is a tremendous blessing, and neither its value nor its cost can be fully measured.
Yet even with its immeasurable value and great cost, civic freedom pales in comparison to spiritual freedom. While civic freedom allows us to participate in all sorts of religious activities without fear of retribution or persecution, it is spiritual freedom in Christ that secures for us a full and true life, regardless of opposition or hostile actors—and regardless of the existence or absence of civic freedom. It is spiritual freedom whose worth is truly incalculable, precisely because of the One who paid the price for it. Because of the sacrifice of Christ, we are no longer bound to sin. The result of this, according to Paul, is that we who are in Christ will not be found condemned. We have been freed from the very thing that would destroy us. We have been extricated from a dire predicament for which we have no adequate solutions on our own. In Christ we are truly free.
May we all enjoy celebrating together today the freedom we have in Christ.
