I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
I was having a discussion the other day with a friend about life and trials and the things that we see in our world from day to day. We agreed that it seems our world is in a state of increasing moral chaos. We also agreed that it has probably always been so. What we wondered about was why it appears to be so much worse than it has ever been, when we know from history that, for the most part, societies and civilizations have always been corrupt and evil. The fact of the matter is that although what we are experiencing today may be “new” in many ways, the depth of moral depravity is certainly not. From the earliest of times, this world has been a place of darkness. Ultimately my friend and I came to the conclusion that we tend to grow more sensitive to evil as we get older. This “discovery” did not help us much.
What does help is the knowledge that God is fully aware of all that goes on in our lives. He always has been and always will be the protector and guardian of his people. Though wicked seems to flourish and prosper all around us, we can rest in the truth that our great God is right here with us. He is near, and he cares deeply for the plight of his people. “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, both now and forevermore,” reminds the psalmist in Psalm 125:2. Even when things are at their worst, we remember that God is with us.
It is all too easy to walk through this life dazed and confused because of all that goes on around us. So much is out of our control. So much is bad and terrible and grief-causing. Yet we serve a God who goes before us and makes for us a solid foundation upon which to stand. The LORD is sovereign and faithful. He is at our right hand. Thus we shall not be shaken.
