Class Notes from Kevin Billips

Hello, WMCOC family. I would so much rather be meeting with all of you tonight at the church building for Wednesday prayer and Bible study! However, due to our efforts to fight the spread of an aggressively contagious virus for the sake of the vulnerable ones we know and love as well as the community at large, we find ourselves still at home and seeking ways to connect with and encourage each other spiritually. I pray this brief note will assist you in that pursuit.

Had we met tonight, I would have been leading a Wednesday class discussion on another “hard saying” from the Bible- Luke 12:49. Let’s begin with the passage…

“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”

The statement from Jesus, the “Prince of Peace” at first read through, strikes many as being the opposite of peaceful. It makes some pause and wonder if Jesus is briefly letting us know of a secret, inner desire to destroy the earth with fire and a longing to get on with it already! This passage like all other Bible verses though are best understood when we “zoom out” for greater context and also consider the totality of what God has revealed to us about himself, his Son, the Holy Spirit, humanity and all of His creation.

Jesus, like the Father is not willing that any should perish, but that ALL would be saved (2 Peter 3:9 and 1 Timothy 2:4). This world is destined for destruction by fire, but our Lord seeks to patiently offer us time to know Him and choose eternal life! God bless each of you and your households this week!
