Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
The most important part of any building is the foundation. It matters not how beautifully adorned, how well appointed, or how clean and inviting a structure may be. It also does not matter how technologically advanced, or how “cutting edge” the structure is. Without a solid foundation upon which to stand, that structure is destined to fall. And as a result of its fall, it will invariably cause grief for a whole lot of people.
The same is true for people. We require a firm foundation upon which to stand. From a very early age, we need to be taught the things that are most important in life. We need to be exposed to fundamental teachings that will ensure we have a solid foundation for the rest of our lives. Moses addresses this in Deuteronomy 6:7 where he urges the Hebrew people to teach God’s commands to their children. The reason for doing this is so that they may know God and that they may walk with Him.
For over a year and a half now, the Sword Training program here at West Metro has been dutifully equipping our young children. This is a holistic program that takes our children through the entire bible in a multi-year cycle. Children who go through this program will be well prepared for life with God. They will have a solid foundation.
As parents and other adults, we have an opportunity to help our children as they learn. Check the back of the bulletin each week to see what the kids are studying, and take the time to ask them about it as you see them in the foyer or elsewhere. It will help them share what they have learned, and along the way we will make some new friends. –Ricky
